LJYB 2018 Opening Day Information Guide
Opening Day is this Saturday, February 24th. This is the single busiest day of the year for La Jolla Youth Baseball families. To help you navigate the day we are providing this information guide which list everything you need to know about the big day! Everything you need to know is also posted on our website so check it for up to the minute information including the latest scores and home runs.
Game Schedule: The best place to see what team is playing where and when is the Master Calendar. The Master calendar lists all the games for each week along with any special events so scroll to the bottom of the page to see a list of this weekend’s games.
Parking: Parking in La Jolla is always difficult and opening day is no different. Your best bet is the YMCA parking lot and the Torrey Pines Elementary parking lot. You are allowed to park there. Other good spots are along Cliffridge Avenue and along Via Posada Avenue for those going to Pinto and Mustang games. Check out our Field Map for a satellite view of the fields and surrounding area. If you are running late, dropping off your baseball player at the Cliffridge circle by the Pony field is a good option. Please do not block driveways or park in areas marked "No Parking" as cars will be towed.
Individual and Team Pictures: All teams in LJYB will have team and individual pictures taken on Opening Day. The photo schedule for your team can be downloaded HERE. The “League Package” is included with your registration fee. This includes 1 Composite Memory Mate (player and team photo in one picture), 1 Laminated Bag Tag and 4 Wallet photos. There are a multitude of options to add to this package. Click HERE to see your options and to get a head start on filling out the order form that everyone is required to turn in. Pictures will be taken on the Big Field behind Torrey Pines Elementary School.
Opening Day Ceremonies: This WILL BE the biggest opening day ceremony in LJYB history so make sure you and your baseball player are there to participate and witness all the action. The ceremony will be held at the Bronco field with its newly painted stands complete with a spacious viewing deck at the top for those that like to stand and check out the ocean between innings.
The ceremony kicks off at 12:00 noon. New LJYB President Jim Sampson will kick of the ceremony. He will be followed by the extremely inspirational head coach of the USD Toreros, Rich Hill who always gives a great speech. There will be a musical performance by Red40.
A new addition to this year's ceremony will be a raffle of several items donated by former La Jolla Youth Baseball players now playing professional baseball. The list of items is headlined by several donations from star outfielder Bradley Zimmer of the Cleveland Indians who continues to be extremely generous in his support of our league. Bradley has donated a signed game bat, a signed La Jolla Baseball t-shirt, a game used Indians warm up shirt, signed cleats and a signed Indians hat! We will also be raffling off autographed bats from major leaguer Colin Walsh of the Los Angeles Angeles and Jose Vizcaino Jr of the San Francisco Giants along with signed hats, balls and cleats from Kyle Zimmer of the Kansas City Royals.
This will be followed by a special recognition of our “Decade on the Diamond” players who have played their entire youth baseball career here in our league starting at age 5 in Shetland and finishing in Pony. We will wrap up with the GIANT league photo of all 365 players along with managers and coaches lining the Bronco infield.
Snack Bar Is Open: Opening Day will mark the opening of the bigger and better snack bar located behind third base of the Bronco field. All of the past favorites including Slushees, sunflower seeds and Big League Chew gum will be available. This year we are adding even more items like Dippin Dots so be sure to stop by and take a look. The snack bar is also selling redesigned La Jolla Baseball shirts that are so cool the pro players wear them!
To help celebrate the grand opening of the snack bar (and to help with the overflow crowd) Kona Ice and will be onsite with their famous food trucks to serve you their great food as well! We will also have a brand new barbeque grilling up favorites all day!
Help Out: Please bring any used baseball or softball gear including bats (including the 2017 and before models that are now illegal), gloves, catcher’s gear, helmets, cleats, or gently used baseball clothing (except jerseys) and drop them off at the Kids Gear for Baseball collections bins by the snack bar.
Please deposit empty aluminum cans and plastic bottles in the recycle bins located around the park area. LJYB will recycle them.
